July 14, what a church one. A holiday of pleasant surprises

The holy brothers Cosmas and Damian, unmercenary doctors who lived in the second half of the 3rd - early 4th centuries, are venerated by both the Orthodox and Catholic churches.

In the hagiographic literature, three pairs of holy doctors with such names who lived in different places are known: some, according to legend, were born, lived and suffered in Rome - in 284 under the emperor Karin, Arabian (by origin), executed in Cilicia between 287 and 303 year, and Asian (or Asian), natives of Asia Minor, who lived and died peacefully in the III century and were buried in Fereman.

And since they all lived in the III century, and information about them is scarce and in many respects coincides, confusion and difficulties arose for a long time with the correlation of their relics, icon-painting images and temples dedicated to them.

The Catholic Church reveres only Cosmas and Damian of Arabia, the Orthodox - all three couples.

July 14 - memory of Cosmas and Damian, who lived and were martyred in Rome under the emperor Marcus Aurelius Karin, who ruled in 283-285. They were born into a Christian family and, having become doctors, became famous not only for their high professional qualifications, but also for the fact that they never took money from patients. Naturally, the growing popularity of Christian doctors should sooner or later attract the attention of the authorities, who considered Christianity a dangerous "totalitarian sect." According to legend, having learned that a guard was sent for Cosmas and Damian, the Christian neighbors warned them, and the brothers managed to hide. But when they heard that instead of them they began to arrest fellow-believers, they returned and voluntarily surrendered in exchange for the release of the hostages.

They were accused of witchcraft, they did not admit the accusations, they confessed faith in Christ, but, according to life, in the midst of the trial, the emperor suddenly fell ill and they cured him. Of course, after that the brothers were released. And Cosmas and Damian died at the hands of a doctor-colleague, who, out of envy, invited them to the mountains to collect medicinal herbs and pushed them into the river.

Their namesakes and colleagues from Asia (in Asia Minor) were born into a family of a pagan Greek and Christian. Their father died when they were still young, and their mother raised them. It is believed that they lived no later than the 4th century, because in the first half of the 5th century, under Emperor Theodosius the Younger, temples were already built in the name of these saints. In addition, the Copts, who separated from Orthodoxy since the time of the Council of Chalcedon (431), recognize them as saints.

Cosmas and Damian of Arabia - who are revered by Catholics - are almost contemporaries of Rome: they were beheaded during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian.

Since the IV century, temples in the name of the holy unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian began to appear in Jerusalem, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and when the Emperor Justinian built a church for them in Constantinople and transferred the relics of the brothers-doctors, buried in the Syrian city of Cyrus and considered miraculous, into it, it became a place pilgrimage. And in Rome, Pope Felix IV dedicated the basilica in the Forum of Vespasian to Saints Cosmas and Damian, in which mosaics of the 6th century have been preserved, illustrating their lives.

In Russia, the unmercenary doctors Cosmas and Damian, apart from July 14 (Roman, martyrs), have long been commemorated on October 30 (Arabian, martyrs) and November 14 (Asia), and the church services composed in their honor, with the exception of some hymns, are completely different - one more confirmation that we are talking about different people.

But since there is no documentary evidence of them left, it is difficult to determine who this or that local legend means. So, for example, in the appeal of the committee for the construction of the Vladimir Cathedral in Chersonesos Tauride (in Sevastopol) in 1861 it is said: "The holy unmercenaries and miracle workers Cosmas and Damian, who had worked hard in this pagan city in the evangelical preaching, were exiled here." It is difficult to say which of the three pairs of doctor brothers visited Crimea, but their memory is still alive there today: a spring at the foot of Chatyr-Dag is named after them, and the Kosmo-Damianovsky monastery is located near it.

On this day, the Slavs preferred to weed vegetable gardens in order to avoid the appearance of weeds. Also, the haymaking period began, and therefore, people did not sit at home, but worked in the fields.

It was decided on July 14 to collect plants that are suitable for dyeing fabrics. There were also signs that were tracked that day. On July 14, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of remembrance of the holy unmercenaries and miracle workers Damian and Cosmas, who lived in Rome and died in 284.

Damian and Cosmas were siblings and became known initially as doctors. In addition, they possessed the gift of healing, which is why they became famous among the people. Moreover, the brothers helped people completely free of charge, thanks to which they received the nicknames of unmercenaries. They openly preached faith in Jesus Christ.

During the persecutions organized against Christians, the brothers were arrested and put on trial, where they tried to prove that they did not engage in sorcery and witchcraft, they did not deceive anyone. However, they were not believed at first.

At that time, the emperor Karin fell seriously ill, and the brothers were brought to him, telling them to demonstrate their gift. After that Damian and Cosmas were set free.

However, the brothers' physician-mentor lived in this city, who envied their fame. The old man called the brothers to the mountains, ostensibly to collect medicinal herbs, where he killed them by throwing their bodies into the river.

July 14 was popularly associated with gatherings. Usually the tables were laid together, guests gathered in the houses, who sang songs and had fun.

Hypericum blooming was observed later. Also in the middle of summer, on July 14, they made gooseberry jam.

Since ancient times, people have been engaged in fishing. Initially, this was done only for the purpose of food, and with the development of civilization, fishing turned into a favorite pastime for many, an opportunity to get closer to nature and take a break from the bustle of the city.

* Unmercenaries and miracle workers Cosmas and Damian, who suffered in Rome (284). Venerable John of Rylsky (return of the relics, 1469). Monk Nikodim the Holy Mountain (1809).
Martyrs Potitus (c. 138-161); Constantine the miracle worker and those who suffered with him (IV); Mauritius; 25 Nicomedians; 2000 truncated. Saints Perepetui, Paul and those who suffered with him. Venerable Leo of the Hermit; Peter, former patrician (854); Vasily (IX), founder of the Deep Rivers monastery. Righteous Angelina, despotiss of Serbia (XVI). PriestMartyr Arcadius Presbyter (1918).

Martyrs Cosmas and Damian

The Martyrs Cosmas and Damian were brothers and lived in a village near the city of Rome. They were doctors. Healing the sick, they did not take any payment, which is why they are called unmercenaries, like Saints Cyrus and John whose memory is January 31. For the disinterested treatment of the sick, the holy brothers were called "free doctors." In addition to medical knowledge, they received from God the gift of healing diseases, because they were very pious. With their kindness and miraculous healing of diseases and their preaching, they converted many to Christ. Usually the saints said to the unbelieving sick: “We heal sickness not by our strength, but by the power of Christ, the true God. Believe in Him and you will be well. " In their time (in the 3rd century) there was a persecution against Christians, and they were advised to hide from the persecutors; but the saints themselves agreed to suffer. The king gave them over to cruel torments, but God struck him with illness. Then the saints healed the king, and the king set them free; the doctor, from whom Saints Cosmas and Damian studied, envied their glory and killed them. This was in 284. Particles of the relics of the martyrs are kept on Athos, in the Zograf monastery.
Cosmas and Damian are considered the patrons of doctors and surgeons and are sometimes featured on medical emblems.

Monk Nikodim Svyatorets

The Monk Nikodim Svyatorets (in the world Nicholas) was born, according to the most reliable data, in 1749 on the island of Naxos. While still young, he went to Mount Athos and there, in the Dionysian monastery, he was tonsured with the name Nicodemus. At first he bore the obedience of a reader and a clerk, but
Two years later, Metropolitan Macarius of Corinth (who was glorified by miracles by death), who arrived on Athos, gave the young monk for consideration the manuscript of Philokalia (Dobrotolubiya) he found in 1777 in the Vatopedi monastery. The work on it was the beginning of the many years of literary labors of Father Nikodim.
Having entered the obedience of Father Arseny Peloponnesus at the Pantokrator skete, the Monk Nicodemus continued his exploit as a scribe monk and zealously engaged in the study of Holy Scripture and the works of the Holy Fathers. Having received a separate cell in this skete in 1783, the Monk Nicodemus received the schema from the elder father Damascene Stavrud, after which he remained in silence for six years, without ceasing to study the Holy Scriptures. When Metropolitan Macarius of Corinth again arrived on Athos, he entrusted the Monk Nicodemus with editing the works of Simeon the New Theologian. The Monk Nicodemus abandoned his exploit of silence and again devoted himself to literary activity, zealously working in this field for the good of the Holy Church, composing his own works and editing the works of others. In his last years the monk lived with the icon painters Stephen and Neophyte Skurteev (Kutsovlakhov), where he reposed in the Lord on July 1, 1809.
The Monk Nikodim Svyatorets was above all a true ascetic monk, who fulfilled all the rules of a strict monastic life. But in addition to this, until his death, he carried the feat of a scribe monk. The works of the pre-like Nicodemus are numerous and versatile, they relate to asceticism, to hagiography, to canon law, to the interpretation of Holy Scripture; he was the author of teaching works and services. In Russia, his "Invisible Curse" was especially popular, and has been published in a number of editions. He was rightly called the "Athos bee", who collected a lot of honey from different flowers for the spiritual nourishment of Christians.
The Monk Nikodim Svyatorets was canonized by the Orthodox Church of Constantinople in 1955; by the definition of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, it was included in the month of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In Russia there are a large number of holidays due to the variety of which it is often very difficult to keep track of them. There are not only professional and state holidays, but also Orthodox ones.

Church holidays are a separate category. They also include an impressive number of reasons to remember this or that saint, or a significant event in the Orthodox calendar. Today is no exception in this respect, since on July 14 the church honors the memory of two unmercenaries - the brothers Cosmas and Damian, who lived in Rome under King Karin.

What is an Orthodox holiday today, July 14: the memory of Saints Cosmas and Damian

On Friday, July 14, 2017, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the holy martyrs, miracle workers and unmercenaries, the brothers Cosmas and Damian, who suffered in Rome (III century).

They were originally from Rome, by profession - doctors. Christian parents raised the brothers to be pious and chaste, and God rewarded them with the gift of healing diseases.

Cosmas and Damian sent their gift, as well as the education of doctors, to help people, healing everyone who turned to them and without taking money for it. At the same time, they told people: “We do not heal diseases by our strength, but by the power of Christ, the True God. Believe in Him and you will be well. "

Rumors spreading about Christian doctors, who were called "free doctors", attracted the attention of the Roman emperor Karin, who sent soldiers after them.

Hearing about this, the Christians asked Saints Cosmas and Damian to hide for a while for the sake of those who resorted to their help. But, not finding brothers, the soldiers seized other Christians. Then Saints Cosmas and Damian surrendered themselves into the hands of the Roman soldiers, asking them to release the hostages taken in their place.

First, the holy brothers were imprisoned, and then they were brought before the emperor for trial. Cosmas and Damian confessed their faith in Christ, and also talked about how they treated everyone for free and did not harm anyone, while they refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods.

However, the emperor continued to insist, but through the prayer of the holy brothers, God struck him with a sudden illness so that he could experience the omnipotence of the Lord, who does not forgive blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

People who saw the miracle said: "Great is the Christian God and there is no other God besides Him!" Many believers asked the holy doctors to heal the emperor, and he himself pleaded with the saints, promising to turn to the True God Christ the Savior. The saints healed him. After that, Saints Cosmas and Damian were honorably released and began to heal people again.

However, the old doctor-mentor, envious of the brothers and their glory, called on Cosmas and Damian, as if to collect rare medicinal herbs and, leading them far into the mountains, killed them, and threw their bodies into the river. The saints brothers received their martyrdom in about 283-284 years. Through prayers to them, at all times, various miracles of healings took place.

One Orthodox church holiday is celebrated on July 14. The list of events informs about church holidays, fasts, days of veneration of the memory of saints. The list will help you find out the date of a significant religious event for Orthodox Christians.

The unmercenaries of the Martyrs Cosmas and Damian, who suffered in Rome

The day of honoring the holy brothers Cosmas and Damian, who indulged in torment in Rome under the emperor Karin (III century). They were doctors by profession, possessed the gift of healing from diseases. Killed out of envy by their mentor physician.

The holy martyrs, miracle workers and unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian - brothers, originally from Rome, doctors by profession, were martyred in Rome under the emperor Karin (283-284). Raised by Christian parents in the rules of piety, they led a strict, chaste life and were awarded from God the grace-filled gift of healing diseases.

By their kind and disinterested attitude towards people, united with exceptional mercy, the brothers converted many to Christ. The saints used to say to the sick: “We do not heal diseases by our strength, but by the power of Christ, the True God. Believe in Him and you will be well. " For the disinterested treatment of the sick, the holy brothers were called "free doctors."

Effective service to one's neighbor, spiritual influence on others, which brought many to the Church, drew attention to the brothers of the Roman authorities. Soldiers were sent for doctors. Hearing about this, the Christians asked Saints Cosmas and Damian to hide for a while for the sake of those who resorted to their help. But, not finding brothers, the soldiers seized other Christians in the village where the saints lived. Then Saints Cosmas and Damian left the refuge and surrendered themselves into the hands of the Roman soldiers, asking them to release the hostages taken in their place.

In Rome, the saints were first imprisoned and then taken to the court. The holy brothers openly confessed before the Roman emperor and the court of their faith in Christ God, who came to earth to save mankind and atone for the sin of the world, they resolutely refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. They spoke:

“We did not harm anyone, we do not engage in magic and sorcery, for which you accuse us. We heal ailments by the power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and do not take any reward for helping the sick because the Lord bequeathed to His disciples: “Freely you received, freely give” (Matt. 10, 8).

However, the emperor continued to insist. Through the prayer of the holy brothers, filled with grace-filled power, God struck Karin with a sudden illness, so that he could experience the omnipotence of the Lord on his own experience, who does not forgive blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. People who saw the miracle exclaimed: "Great is the Christian God and there is no other God besides Him!" Many believers asked the holy doctors to heal the emperor, and he himself pleaded with the saints, promising to turn to the True God Christ the Savior. The saints healed him. After that, Cosmas and Damian were honorably released to freedom and again began to heal diseases.

But what the hatred of the pagans and the cruelty of the Roman authorities could not do was accomplished by black envy, one of the strongest passions of man's sinful nature. The old doctor-mentor, from whom the holy brothers once studied the art of medicine, began to envy their fame. Driven to a frenzy by this insidious, all-draining passion, he called upon the holy brothers, once beloved by his disciples, as if to collect rare medicinal herbs and, leading them far into the mountains, killed them, and threw their bodies into the river.

This is how the unrequited healers, the holy brothers Cosmas and Damian, who devoted their entire lives to Christian service to their neighbors, who escaped the Roman sword and prison, but were treacherously killed by their teacher, ended their earthly journey as a martyr.

The Lord glorified His saints. And now, through the prayers of the holy unmercenaries, all who, with faith, resort to their holy intercession, receive healing from God.

Old-style date: July 1

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of two unmercenaries - the brothers Cosmas and Damian, who lived in Rome under King Karin. Being skilled doctors, the brothers healed sick people and livestock, without demanding reward for their labors, helped those in need, and by their actions converted many to the Christian faith. For their deeds, Cosmas and Damian received the nickname "unrequited (that is, selfless) doctors." However, there were ill-wishers who slandered the brothers; the unmercenaries were mercilessly killed.

Haymaking was in full swing in Russia that day. On this occasion, they said: "Kuzma-Demyan never dawn, they lead women to the mowing"; "Kozma and Demyan came - we went to the mowing"... The gardeners also spent their days in the labors: it was necessary to weed the ridges and begin to collect the first root crops, including for sale. "Vegetable garden - woman's income", - said the peasants.

On Kuzma (Kosma) and Demyan (Damian), berries were also collected - raspberries and gooseberries, from which they made jam, made compotes. By the way, the raspberry jam cooked on this day turns out to be especially tasty. Gooseberries were also used in the preparation of second courses: for example, they stewed chickens with it.

Despite the hot suffering, women on this day managed not only to work, but also to celebrate their holiday - Summer Kuzminki. Women and girls gathered for feasts, cooked porridge-pork or mixed porridge (everything that everyone brought into the cauldron got into the pot: some cereals, some flour, some milk, some eggs), drank beer. The feast was accompanied by songs, the exchange of helpful advice and heartfelt conversations.

Every year on July 14, all of France celebrates a national holiday - (La Fête Nationale / Bastille Day) or July 14 Day (French Le Quatorze Juillet), established back in 1880.

The historical event that became the basis for the establishment of the holiday took place during the French Revolution - in 1789, the insurgent Parisians stormed the fortress-prison Bastille - a symbol of royal despotism and freed seven prisoners. This event is considered the beginning of the French Revolution, as well as a symbol of the overthrow of absolutism.

Although Bastille Day is considered a national holiday in France, it is celebrated not only in this country, but throughout the world. The siege and capture of the Bastille is one of the greatest events in the history of mankind. It became a symbol of the political liberation achieved in a revolutionary way, and the word "Bastille" itself became a household word.

Celebrations on this day are held throughout France. But, perhaps, even celebrating the New Year cannot be compared with what is happening in Paris on July 14. As you know, the Great French Revolution began with the armed seizure of the formidable and hated Bastille prison-fortress by the insurgent Parisians on this day in 1789.

However, the majority of the jubilant people today no longer regard this holiday as revolutionary. It is no longer important for them what and how happened more than 200 years ago. Something great is celebrated for every Frenchman, bright, joyful and patriotic.

The official program of the celebration includes a series of balls: balls for firemen, the Great Ball, which takes place on July 13 in the Tuileries Garden. On Bastille Day itself, a solemn military parade takes place on the Champs Elysees. The parade starts at 10 o'clock in the morning from Etoile and moves towards the Louvre, where the President of France takes it.

On the Concorde Square, opposite the famous Arc de Triomphe, special places for spectators have been erected. The finale of the holiday is a big fireworks display and fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and on the Champs de Mars. This pyrotechnic performance usually starts at 10 pm.

Despite the somewhat modest official program of celebrations, incessant parties take place throughout the city - in discos, bars, nightclubs, in houses and just on the streets. Now on the site of the Bastille there is a large transport circle - the junction with the Column of the Bastille in the center.

The great mission of peacekeepers is the resolution of military conflicts (Photo: Pichugin Dmitry, Shutterstock)

Every year on July 14, South Ossetia celebrates Peacemaker's Day... This is a great holiday for the Republic. The word peacemaker consists of two words, "peace" and "creator", therefore peacemakers are the creators of peace, tranquility, and there can be nothing nobler than this mission on Earth.

On this day, July 14, 1992, on the basis of the Agreement on the Basic Principles for the Settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian Conflict, which was signed by the heads of Russia, Georgia, North and South Ossetia on June 24, 1992, trilateral peacekeeping forces entered the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict... They served as a buffer between the warring parties.

It is believed that thanks to the introduction of peacekeepers, it was possible to stop the hostilities, which lasted for three years and claimed hundreds of lives. After all, peacekeepers are the main guarantor of security in the conflict zone.

This was also confirmed by the events of August 2008, when Georgian troops attacked the republic and destroyed part of its capital, Tskhinvali. Russia, defending the inhabitants of South Ossetia, sent troops into the republic and, after five days of hostilities, ousted the Georgian military from the region. But it cost the lives of 64 Russian servicemen, including 15 peacekeepers.

In accordance with the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance of September 17, 2008 and the Agreement on Joint Efforts in the Protection of the State Border of April 30, 2009, the fourth Russian military base and the Border Directorate of the FSB of the Russian Federation have been formed in South Ossetia, which continue the work of peacekeepers.

In honor of the holiday, solemn events are held on this day. Among them - parades of military personnel, demonstration performances, ceremonial meetings and concerts. Traditionally, in Tskhinvali, celebrations begin with the laying of wreaths at the place of death of Russian peacekeepers in Upper Town in August 2008. Various actions are being held in the settlements of the republic, the purpose of which is to help the families of the killed South Ossetian peacekeepers. In tribute to the memory of the peacekeepers, one of the central streets of Tskhinvali is named after them.
