The structure of the irmos is the basis for the melody and the rhythmic structure of the troparion. The length and number of stanzas must match.

There are several canons to the saint:

  • “In the depths of the bed sometimes ......” - the beginning of the irmos of the first canon.
  • The 2nd canon to Nicholas the Wonderworker begins with the irmos "Christ is born - glorify ..."
  • “Let us sing a song, people ... ..” - the irmos of the canon from the service for the transfer of the relics of the saint.
  • “I will open my mouth…..” - the beginning of the fourth canon to Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Canons and Akathist in Church Slavonic

Prayer chants in Church Slavonic are much harder to find than in Russian.

In churches, all the texts of worship are pronounced only in Church Slavonic. This language incorporates the centuries-old experience of communication between a Russian person and God. In addition, reading in Church Slavonic helps to escape from everyday thoughts, create a special atmosphere and immerse yourself in the world of prayer.

The Akathist in Church Slavonic will be difficult for a believer who is just starting to learn this language to understand. In order for the text to be better perceived, you can read the translation and interpretation in Russian.

Canons that are more complex in structure are best read in Russian, so they will be easier to understand.

What is better to read: an akathist or a canon to a saint?

The canon is a more ancient genre of church chant than the akathist. The text of the canons was written by the holy fathers, whose level of spiritual growth and awareness of the Divine universe far exceeds ordinary human understanding. Akathists, as a rule, were created in a later period by spiritual writers, not all of whom were monks or ministers of the church. Therefore, choosing between the canon and the akathist, according to some priests, it is better to give preference to reading the former.

At the same time, the akathist to the saint is easier to read and understand, since the structure of the text is much simpler.

The canons to Nicholas the Wonderworker are a less laudatory prayer book than an akathist, but it has a pleading character. Despite this, you can also ask for help by reading an akathist.

Pray to Christ God, grant forgiveness of sins to those who honor your holy memory with love.

Glory, and now.
Like the Virgin and One in the wives of Thee, without a seed, who gave birth to the flesh of God, we all appease the birth of humanity: the fire has settled in Thee of the Deity, and like a baby, bring the Creator and Lord. Thus, the angelic and human race worthily glorify Your Most Holy Nativity, and according to the cry of Ty: pray to Christ God of sins, grant forgiveness, bowing by faith to Your Most Holy Christmas.

Glory: In Heaven, the inherent glory is now in vain, and enjoying the radiance of the inexpressible and Divine dawns, enjoying the radiance, cover me with your intercession, reverend, saint of Christ all-honestly.

And now: Yes, seek Your image, buried by passions, Savior, hiding the powers of heaven, incarnated from the Virgin, appeared to You calling: we know no other God to You.

Canto 6
Irmos: Lying in the sinful abyss, I call on the abyss, unsearchable of Your mercy, from aphids, God, raise me up.

Even the victory of Nicholas, the crown on your versa is worthy of relying: like a victorious winner, save thee who call.

Glory: I am mortified, blessed, sinful, and immersed in passions of anxiety, appearing to save the haven of the Divine will.

And now: I put my hopes on Thee, Mother Ever-Virgin, my salvation, and I put Thy Representative of life, but I am firm and unshakable.

Katavasia: Pray to God for us, St. Father Nicholas, as we diligently resort to you, a quick helper and prayer book for our souls.

(Or, ina: Deliver your servants from troubles, St. Nicholas of Christ, as if all according to Bose we resort to you, to a quick helper and warm intercessor, and a prayer service to the Savior for our souls.)

And we sing, Lord, have mercy, like the 3rd song.

I fell into a sharp temptation, and fiercely rebuked, and approached the gates of hell, we are struck with sorrow, save me with your prayers, blessed, and raise up singing: blessed be the God of our fathers.

Glory: Irrelevant light We shine with immaterial rays, being in the darkness of sorrows, embittered seekers, and instruct those who sing to the enlightenment of joy: blessed be the God of our fathers.

And now: Pray to Christ, Thy Son and God, Virgin Mother of God, sold by fierce sins and serpentine flattery, to be delivered by His honest blood to those who sing: blessed be the God of our fathers.

Canto 8

On Reading the Canons

The canons are divided into songs, their number (9) is connected with the number of biblical songs used in ancient divine services. The number of songs in the canon changed - there were originally one-songs, later two-, three-songs, and from the time of St. Andrew of Crete, full canons of 9 songs began to be used, in accordance with biblical verses.

Useful materials

In modern worship, the second hymn is omitted in the canons; in its mournful content, it is sung only during Great Lent. The ancient practice of abbreviated canons in 2 and 3 odes is remembered during the services of the fore-feast of Christ, Theophany, before the Transfiguration, and on some days of the Colored Triodion.

Songs consist of irmos and troparia, of which there may be several. In our service, the choir usually sings the irmos, and the readers read the troparia (with the exception of the Paschal canon, which is sung in full).

Interesting fact

According to the rule of constructing the canon, a theme is set in the irmos - a biblical song, and the troparia reveal this main theme and connect its content with the theme of the holiday to which the canon is dedicated or the life of a saint.

However, at present, the verses of biblical songs are used mainly during Great Lent, at other times they are replaced by refrains in honor of a celebrated person or event: “Glory to You, our God, glory to You” or “Have mercy on me, God, have mercy on me”, etc. .d. In the canon to St. Nicholas, the refrain is used: "Saint Father Nicholas, pray to God for us."

The most famous authors of the canons are St. John of Damascus and Andrew of Crete. Canons as church hymns can be both (the penitential canon of St. Andrew of Crete, read during Great Lent), prayer (the canon of the Most Holy Theotokos), and festive (Easter canon), or in honor of some Feast and saint, for example, in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

veneration of a saint

The canon to St. Nicholas, Archbishop of the World of Lycia, the Wonderworker, like the canons to other saints, sings of his earthly ministry, his feats of faith and miracles.

Several canons are dedicated to St. Nicholas, which are used for various services. The Church celebrates several days a year dedicated to St. Nicholas:

  • December 19 / December 6 O.S.;
  • May 22/May 9 O.S. – the transfer of the saint from the World of Lycia to the Italian city of Bari;
  • August 11/July 29 old style - The Nativity of St.

There is a tradition to dedicate a special service to St. Nicholas every Thursday. In almost every parish on this day, believers sing an akathist or canon to their beloved saint. In Oktoikh there are canons composed for each of the eight voices for the weekly service to the saint, which in practice usually takes place on Wednesday evening.

Thus, there are several canons to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, but the common refrain for all canons to the saint is: “To St. Father Nicholas, pray to God for us.”

Among the most famous canons, one can name the "Creation of Feofanovo", sung in tone 2, with the continuation and development of the theme of the first irmos, dedicated to the washing away of sin, as the pharaoh's host by sea waves. So are you, says the first troparion, Nicholas the Wonderworker, give me enlightenment and illuminate my darkened soul with the praise of your memory: all-blessed, memory.

Another canon (voice 1) is also known, which begins with an irmos: “Christ is born, praise! Christ from Heaven, save! Christ on earth - ascend! Sing to the Lord, all the earth, and sing with joy, people, as if you were glorified.

Believers love and often read at home canon (tone 4) with the singing of an akathist, which begins with the words:

“I will open my mouth, / and the Spirit will be filled, / and I will vomit a word to the Queen Mother, / and I will appear, triumphantly bright, / and I will sing, rejoicing, That miracles.” Then the general refrain: “To the Hierarch Father Nicholas, pray to God for us.” And then the disclosure of the topic dedicated to the triumph and memory of the saint: “To the good shepherd of Christ’s flock, rejoice, Nicholas, / like a laity father is honest and a teacher, / and give me, rejoice to bring you.”

I must say that the canon is a rather complex work, it is not easy to read it, for this you need to get at least a little acquainted with the life of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the great saint of God. It is better to choose the texts of the canons for reading, provided with stresses, because. in the Church Slavonic text, rare archaic words and phrases are often found. However, with minimal effort, it is possible for everyone to understand the text and read at home prayer.

Why St. Nikolai is called the Pleasant

Interesting fact

The saints of God are people who lived righteously on earth and devoted their entire lives to serving God, fulfilling His will, preaching and affirming faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity, who testified to this faith with their blood and sweat. Those who pleased God in their lives became partakers of His Divine properties, communicated to them from the Source of holiness — God.

The Church distinguishes different faces of holiness, subdividing all God's chosen ones according to the ranks of their ministry, for example: prophets and apostles, martyrs and confessors, saints and reverends, unmercenaries and blessed, righteous and faithful.

Saint Nicholas, with his love for God and service to people, became like the ancient prophets and Christ's apostles. For his educational and pastoral activity, the Church named him a saint.

Saint Nicholas is a great teacher of the Christian faith, as an archbishop of the city of Myra in Lycia, as a preacher and defender of the Truth, as a participant in the Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325. In the canon we sing to him:

“Now let us sing the saint with songs, the worldly people of the shepherd and teacher, and let us be enlightened by his prayers: behold, appearing all pure, imperishable in spirit, offering Christ a sacrifice immaculate, pure, favorable to God, like a saint, cleansed both in soul and body, the same true representative of the Church and a champion of this, like a great mystery-keeper of God's grace.

In the Orthodox tradition, St. Nicholas is revered as both a good shepherd and a miracle worker:

“The whole sunflower will say, Nicholas the blessed, the abyss of miracles of your virtues: the beggars of the representative, and the orphans and widows of the feeder, and the blind guide, all the same champion.”

The texts of the canons recall his miracles:

“Let us praise the great archpastor and hierarch of all, the chairman of Mirlikisky Nicholas: save many men, unrighteously die property, and the king appears with Avlavius in a dream, resolving an unjust judgment” -

A reminder to us of the miraculous salvation of three men and three governors, condemned to death on libel, but saved by a formidable denunciation of untruth from St. Nicholas, who appeared in a dream to the tsar and envious Avlavius, and frightened them.

  • “Agrika heard that, and his son Vasily was taken away from the emir, and in an instant he placed before his parents healthy from the Saracens, and through my prayer, pluck my soul, ailing and burdened with sins, from the fire of hell, Nikolai,” reading these lines, we recall how the parents were comforted, who, having prayed to St. Nicholas, again found their son alive and unharmed, taken captive by the Saracens.
  • But not only this ancient miracle makes us glorify the life of the miracle worker in the canon, but also the hope that his prayer will help us to get rid of the captivity of sin.
  • The miracle worker Nicholas saved his flock many times, relieving hunger by bringing ships with bread to the harbor at his prayer, or relieving poverty from generous and secret alms, and how many times did he save drowning people who had lost all hope, but finally exclaimed his name: “Strange and terrible miracles you perform, Nicholas, all over the earth and in the sea far away to the needy, interceding with fleeting prayers, a weak doctor and a poor feeder, victories against enemies namesake faithful people.
  • The miracles of St. Nicholas did not stop after the death of the saint of God, and even to this day they do not stop and are calling him with fervent prayer: “Tribes of the earth, let us gather so that the exclamation“ Rejoice! to bring to the saint: for he brings joy to the universe that does not impoverish.

Turning for help to the great saint of God, St. Nicholas, the Wonderworker of Mirliki, we ask for his support and help, we ask you to combine the power of his prayer with our feeble petition. Turning to him for help, we praise his miracles and great faith, reading the canons and other prayers. It is good to read the canons at home prayer, but do not forget about the temple conciliar prayer, because the Lord Himself said:

"... where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20).

Yes, and the saints teach us that it is very useful to call on the saints of God for prayerful help, but the benefit will be even greater if we ourselves try to correct our lives and turn away from sin. Saint John Chrysostom says: “Knowing this, beloved, let us resort to the intercession of the saints and call on them to pray for us, but let us not only rely on their prayers, but we ourselves will begin to act.”

Lord, hear my prayer, inspire my prayer in Thy truth, hear me in Thy truth. And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for no one living will be justified before You. Like an enemy chased my soul, and humbled my belly in the ground. He planted me to eat in the dark, as if for a dead age and my spirit is in me, my heart is troubled in me. I remembered the days of old; I have learned in all Your works, and in the works of Your hand I have learned. Lift up my hands to Thee, my soul is like a dry land to Thee. Hear me soon, Lord, my spirit is gone. Turn not away Your face from me, and I will be like those who go down into the pit. I hear, do me Thy mercy in the morning, as if on Thee hopes. Tell me, Lord, I will go the stink way, for I have taken my soul to Thee. Deliver me from my enemies, Lord, I have resorted to You. Teach me to do Your will, as You are my God. Your good Spirit will guide me to the land of right. For the sake of Thy name, Lord, live me, in Thy righteousness bring my soul out of sorrow. And by Thy mercy consume my enemies, and destroy all the aching souls of my soul, as I am Thy servant.
