Childhood and adolescence

Matrona was born in one of the villages of the Tula province in 1881 into a pious family. Her parents worked constantly, but peasant work did not promise them much wealth. An elderly woman in labor decided that after the birth of her child, she would give him to one of the local shelters.

But a miracle happened and the pregnant woman had a dream: a huge snow-white bird with a human face and tightly closed eyes sat on her chest. The mother considered this a sign from God and abandoned her sinful intention.

Soon a daughter was born. She had no eyes at all, and there was a cross-shaped bulge on her chest.

From birth, the baby adhered to fasting: she did not take mother’s milk on fasting days. And during the reception of Holy Baptism, a cloud rose over the font where the child was. This was a special sign, to which the priest Father Vasily, who conducted the Sacrament, predicted the holiness of the child and said that this child would in due time predict his death.

This is exactly what happened in the future. One day Matrona began to play and suddenly became quiet, then she told her mother and father that Father Vasily had just gone to the Lord. They ran to the priest’s house and became convinced that their daughter’s words were right.

The girl did not play with the local children, because they beat her, pinched her, pushed her, they could put her in a hole and watch how she tried to get out of there. Matrona loved to play with icons at home: she took them off the wall, spoke in a whisper to the faces, and then put the icons to her ear, as if listening to the answer. Thus, the saints became her friends and interlocutors from childhood.

Later, patients began to turn to the girl for healing. Matrona prayed with extraordinary joy for everyone who came, as a result of which everyone who asked received recovery and blessing.

Serving God

As a teenager, Matrona and the daughter of a local landowner made a pilgrimage to Russian holy places. John of Kronstadt himself, when the girl set foot on the ground of St. Andrew's Cathedral in Kronstadt, ordered the parishioners to let her through. Matrona, who had found temporary shelter in their family, promised to tell her something in the evening.

Evening came and she began to talk about how they would go to Italy together, visit Florence, and see the creations of the world's great masters. Matrona had a vision: she saw Italian creations, Palazzo Pitti, palaces with intricate arches. And she advised the student, surprised by the vision of the guest, to make something similar to Italian masterpieces in her thesis. The result is that the commission brilliantly accepted the diploma!

There are rumors that Stalin himself visited the blind old woman. She assured him that the Nazis would not be able to take Moscow.

The date of Matrona’s own death was known, but the blessed one did not cease to help the suffering, the sick and everyone who wanted to meet her. She died peacefully on May 2, 1952. Her holy relics rest on the territory of the Intercession Monastery in the Russian capital.
