What a holiday today in Russia, 09/03/2018: Day of solidarity in the fight against terrorism

On September 3, for the tenth time, Russia celebrates a memorable date - the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism. Civilian victims of terrorist attacks are remembered throughout the country, as well as law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

The establishment of this memorable date is directly related to the tragic events that took place in September 2004, when 334 civilians and law enforcement officers were killed as a result of a terrorist attack at school No. 1 in the small town of Beslan. It is safe to say that the Beslan events shocked the whole world and left no one indifferent. It is impossible to forget what happened in Beslan, just as it is impossible to forget those who gave their lives to save their children. The tragedies of families that have lost their loved ones are perceived by many people as their own personal losses. On this day, mourning events in memory of the victims are held in many parts of the world, since this is a tragedy not only of our country, but of the entire world community. In memory of the victims of terrorist attacks and soldiers who gave their lives to save civilians, 334 white balloons are launched into the sky, according to the number of victims in Beslan. Today we also remember all the victims of other bloody terrorist attacks committed in Moscow, Volgograd, Makhachkala, Volgodonsk, Buinaksk, Pervomaisky, Budennovsk, Vladikavkaz and other parts of the country.

And remembering the innocent victims, we are united in our intention to resist terror with all our might. It is important to remember that terrorism can be combated only together, all together: in most cases, its occurrence can be prevented only at the initial stage - the stage of preparing a terrorist attack. Only tolerance and mutual respect of all citizens of the country will prevent the growth of terrorism and extremism, deprive criminals of hope for support in Russian society.

On this day, in order to unite the entire civil society in countering terrorism, government officials, volunteers, public organizations, ordinary citizens and children participate in mass cultural and sports events dedicated to the mourning date.

The day was dedicated to the memory of Saint Thaddeus, one of the apostles from seventy, one of those who were not in the closest circle of Jesus, but were among the disciples of the twelve apostles.

Thaddeus came from Edessa in Syria, and was converted to Christianity in Jerusalem, after he was impressed by the preaching of John the Baptist on a holiday, who baptized him.

Later he became a preacher in Syria and Mesopotamia, but the result of his activity was especially great in his homeland, where not only many inhabitants of Edessa, but even pagan priests and Prince Avgrai, whom the saint healed from leprosy, became Christians. But Thaddeus did not want to accept the reward, instead rushing to preach to other lands.

Thaddeus' wanderings ended in Virita (today the city is known as Beirut), where he founded a church, and where the saint peacefully departed to another world.

On this day, they were harvesting flax, and because the memory of the martyr Vassa of Alonskaya falls on the same date, the people put together the following proverb: "Baba Vasilisa is happy about flax." After that, the flax stalks had to "lie down", that is, dry out, become more flexible and softer, for which they were laid out in the meadow, and the flax workers spoke: "Lay down, my flax, white and soft, do not be afraid of either the wind or the whirlwind, no frequent rain, no red sun. "

The weather promised to be clear for another month, with the sun in a clear sky, if it was the same on Thaddeus.

The Orthodox Church will celebrate several holidays on September 3, which are clearly highlighted in the church calendar. The third of September falls on the days of the Apostle from 70, Thaddeus. Martyr Bassa and her children, Martyrs Theognius, Agapius and Pista. Saint Abramius, the wonderworker of Smolensk. Church holidays will be held in honor of martyrs for the faith, as well as people who have made an undeniable contribution to the Orthodox faith.

The church holiday of the Martyr Vassa and her children, the martyrs Theognius, Agapius and Pista is celebrated on September 3, 2018

Vassa herself was born into a Christian family, from where she adopted all the traditions and customs of worldly life. Located in the ancient Greek city of Edessa, in the province of Ematia, roughly present-day central Macedonia.

The woman married a local pagan priest. From this man she had three sons: Theognius, Agapius and Pistus. Children, like their mother, were brought up in the Christian faith and adopted all traditions from there. The father of the family hoped for the pagan inheritance of his offspring, and as a result, he mortgaged his wife and children because of a different religion.

Vassa and her children could be released only in one case, if they renounced their beliefs. They were invited to conduct a sacrifice ceremony at the altar and idols of the pagan gods. However, the Christians refused this, for which they had to pay dearly.

The zealous teaching of the children in the Christian faith also bore fruit, so they also did not agree to change their beliefs. First, the eldest son, Theognius, was tortured, he was hung up and tortured with iron claws. The middle son, Agapius, got no less. They began to peel off the skin from his head and chest, the boy held himself firmly and did not shout out a word.

All this time, Vassa, the mother of the children, encouraged them and asked them not to succumb to the intrigues of the pagans. After that, the turn came to the smaller one - Pist. After the torture, all three had their heads cut off, and the inconsolable mother was imprisoned and starved to death. According to legend, she managed to survive due to the fact that an angel appeared to the woman, feeding her with heavenly food.

After a while, Vassu was also tortured with fire, and then they tried to incite the animals. The Christian remained unharmed. Then the pagan priests decided to throw the woman off the cliff into the sea. Having fallen into the water near Vassa, a ship arose in an unusual way, at the stern of which stood three "luminiferous" husbands. They saved the poor woman. Probably these were the incarnations of her sons tortured by torture.

Vassa's path was not interrupted by this, and after these events she herself appeared to one of the local pagan rulers. There she was lynched by the crowd, and then they cut off her head.

The church holiday of the Apostle of the 70, Thaddeus will also be celebrated on this day on September 3, 2018

Thaddeus was from Edessa and, having got to one of the sermons of one of the saints, decided to accept the faith of Christ. Seeing the Savior with his own eyes, he became his disciple, and after that the Lord chose Thaddeus as one of the 70 apostles who would visit cities and preach the Christian faith.

Remained to educate the population on the territory of modern Syria. It is known that Thaddeus achieved success with his mission, converting the pagan prince Avgar, the majority of the local population, and even adherents of polytheism to Christianity. Also in his hometown, the preacher achieved the establishment of the Christian Edessa Church, leaving the priests there.

Abgar, stunned by the speeches of Thaddeus, promised the apostle great riches and possessions for bringing true faith to his land, but the latter refused. Further, his wanderings continued in the Middle East until he reached the ancient Phoenician settlement, present-day Beirut, in Lebanon. Thaddeus also founded a Christian church there, and years later died peacefully, giving the faith almost his entire life.

Religious holiday Monk Abraham of Smolensk

Avraamy was born into a fairly wealthy Smolensk family. His parents have long dreamed of a long-awaited son, since he could continue the family. The boy himself had as many as 12 sisters, so the family hoped that the guy would be the salvation of their surname. Abraham's plans were different.

The young man was looking for himself, after the death of his parents, he gave all the property he received to the poor, churches and monasteries. Wandering around the city in rags, Abraham reached a monastery five miles from the city of Smolensk, where he was tonsured a monk.

There he had the opportunity to study writing in Russian, Greek and Latin. He mastered the skill of icon painting and after becoming the abbot of the monastery in honor of the Position of the Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos, he even painted several icons. One depicted the Last Judgment, which was often mentioned by the Monk Abraham.

Liturgies and conversations with followers of the faith, he always treated people as equals. He did not exalt neither the poor nor the rich, nor himself before their face. Having overcome a long way and sacrificing much, the Orthodox Church remembers and honors his memory about Saint Abraham of Smolensk.

The history of the formation of Tsar Constantine

Tsar Constantine the Great is the son of the governor of Gaul and Britain, as well as Equal-to-the-Apostles Helen. When the adoption of Christianity began, his mother disposed him. His father was a pagan, but he was not against Christians, seeing them as good servants and honest people. In the Roman Empire, in addition to the Western part, Christians were persecuted.

At the request of the emperor Diocletian, Constantine the Great was taken away from his family, making him a hostage, and as a result he began to live at the court. He was able to see this life from the inside, seeing how morality and religious views are corrupted, how humanity falls due to various lusts - luxury, drunkenness, debauchery, reverence for non-existent gods.

He was able to see the other side of the life of the Christian community, where people of all ages and all genders tried to prove the truth of what they believe, the purity of this faith in words and deeds. They suffered and died for her. Most likely, the presence of Constantine at the court of another emperor was the impetus for his conversion to Christianity.

When Constantine's father died, in 306 he became emperor of Britain and Gaul. First, he made the profession of Christianity free in the places of his government. Other rulers did not approve of the action of the new king, they thought about killing him.

According to legend, the king prayed for a sign so that his troops would fight. In 312, during the hostilities with Maxentius, before the battle, the young king noticed a cross in the sky, portending victory. This event horrified the pagans, and Constantine wanted to understand what had happened. Subsequently, this cross was depicted on the ammunition of the soldiers. The cross was named Konstantinov, and consisted of two letters, Chi and Ro, taken from the word Christ.

When this icon was transported past Vladimir, according to legend, the horses stood up and did not move, having arrived in this city. The change of horses did not help. This event was regarded as the requirement of the Mother of God to be in this city. So, after 2 years the temple of the Assumption of the Virgin was built.

The celebration in honor of the icon is celebrated three times a year - 03.06, 06.07, 08.09. The holiday in June is associated with the rescue of Moscow from the Tatars. Day of Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, miracle worker

Saint Metropolitan Peter was born in Volhynia into a pious family. At a young age, he went to live in a monastery. After being ordained to the priesthood, with the blessing of his mentor, he retired from the monastery and founded a monastery in a secluded place on the banks of the Rati River. Here he became so famous for his feats of piety that he became famous throughout Volhynia. In 1308, Patriarch Athanasius of Constantinople erected St. Peter to the Russian Metropolis. The Primate experienced many difficulties during the years of government. In the Russian Land, suffering under the Tatar yoke, he affirmed the true faith, called upon the warring princes to peace and unity. In 1325 St. Peter, at the request of Ioann Kalita, transferred the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, which was of great importance for the entire Russian Land. The saint died in 1326. The outstanding ecclesiastical and state activity of Saint Peter already gave contemporaries a reason to compare him with Saint Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. The main feat of Saint Peter is the struggle for the unity of the Russian state and the blessing of Moscow as the collector of the Russian land.
In 1339, during the reign of Saint Theognost, he was canonized. At the tomb of the saint, the princes kissed the cross as a sign of loyalty to the Grand Duke of Moscow. As a particularly revered patron saint of Moscow, the saint was called up as a witness when drawing up state treaties. The Novgorodians, who had the right to elect their rulers at St. Sophia, after annexation to Moscow under John III, promised to appoint their archbishops only at the tomb of St. Peter the Wonderworker. At the tomb of the saint, the Russian Primate were named and elected.
